“The people have spoken. But the fight continues. Last year, I joined many of my elected prosecutor colleagues from around the country in a public statement denouncing the murder of George Floyd. We raised our voices in solidarity against police brutality and abuses of authority that have led to injustices against Black and Brown people for far too long.

We’ve turned a corner today, with a measure of justice and accountability that resonates beyond those courthouse walls in Minnesota to every corner of this country that cries out for justice—not just for George Floyd, but for the countless other victims whose lives have been lost in similar tragic and senseless fashion.

We must remain committed to police accountability AND criminal justice reform. We can be standard bearers in prosecution by doing what is right—without fail.

To that end, I extend congratulations to the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office and to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for their collaborative work on this successful prosecution.

May today’s guilty verdicts provide a measure of closure for George Floyd’s family and a glimmer of hope for other grieving families across the nation awaiting justice.”
